Archives for the month of: May, 2011

This is just something to amuse you… I found the illustrated type (I’M MAD ABOUT TYPOGRAPHY THESE DAYS), I chuckled to myself, I had to find an illustration to support the text. I’ll be bringing you more lighthearted illustrations and typography.

fun fun fun ;-)

I’m not going to even try to understand what is male, the male species has confused me enough in my life. I’m not talking about the manicure man, or even the butch-rugby man, the man I’m referring to here is somewhere in between.

These are images I put together to best describe this man…

There was a time where my naive self would plan ahead with regards to where I would live how it would look like, with whom I would share this space with. I think sometime in our lives there is an allure of living in the city, being around lights and wonders the city seems to charm us with. Well the thought of living in the city has somehow faded, the individual with whom I planned to live this life with has also faded, but who is to say that one cannot emulate the city allure of high windows, interior brick walls, high ceilings and wonderful space. I’m talking about penthouses and warehouse spaces (which are projected to be built around ARTS on MAIN).

These are mos definitely the spaces sure to keep you feeling young and in touch with city living, even if you caught between living in the city and countryside. I’m going to love being a home maker… so much possibilities…

MIMICRY never hurt no-one…

A friend (Sindiso Nyoni) of mine was telling me yesterday what he wants to do when he is done with the advertising world, which is: he wants to retire to a farm, raise lots of children and do art the whole day. That got me thinking, when the stresses of graphic design die down, what would I like to do?

I want to be a pattern maker. I previously posted something on Renee Rossouw, a pattern designer from Cape Town. Have you heard of Laduma Ngxokolo, an Eastern Cape based pattern designer, AMAZING stuff that. When I first saw his designs they reminded me of the ‘coming of age’ a young boy has to encounter from the Ndebele and Xhosa cultures in South Africa.

This is what the older men buy for boys coming from those rituals, it signifies becoming a man. The patterns are rich and hail a strong sense in South African visual culture. These are just one of the many things that make me PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN…

Three amazing young South African designers in one post, IT DON’T GET BETTER THAN THIS….

The cloche hat reminds me of the fashion in the movie  ’Changeling’ whose lead actress is Angelina Jolie.I can imagine the 1920s  were interesting time interesting times in women’s fashion, the loose-fitting chiffon dresses, the fur coats in winter and yes of course CLOCHE HAT.

I had to post something on this subject after my Pastor’s wife was wearing a cloche hat on sunday. Chic.

I have to mention my friend Sannah for inspiring this post as well… ;-)

It’s really interesting looking at how women or rather designers choose to dress women, yes it is infinitely the women’s decision to wear what she chooses to wear. There are a number of options out there available for all shapes and sizes, I belive it’s just about understanding your frame, once that’s out the way, opportunities to look stunning are endless.

You can find more looks on Zara People .

We love love looking good ;-)

I promised to give myself time of rest this weekend. I needed to have a clear head, among all that needed to get done, I had time for TCM, its my quick fix. There is nothing like watching Dean Martin and Liz Taylor or the very energetic Audrey, the music the love stories, the fashion and the simple class. I’m officially addicted.

TCM: the love of my love.

I’m a little girl at heart, I enjoy being young a vibrant. In my net browsing experdition, I found a website called Ibagyou, they have the most beautiful custom made bags and goodies.

I know your expecting me to comment on a certain bag that caught my eye, well you’re wrong. Today I’m particularly commenting on the colour in one of the featured photo shoots.

WHIMSICAL ME- I love the colour arrangements, particularly how this colour makes me feel. It is not too child like but has an element of play. I feel like an element of play in my life at the moment. Something playful, relaxed, pretty, innocent and girly.

So here is whimsical me :-)

So I have been following Nice Work a Johannesburg based graphic designcompany for the past year now. This is following an industry lecture they held at varsity last year-A bunch of creatives if you ask me. I love the fact that they are in tune with not only design matters but creativity as a whole. Check out their blog for some inspirational work and inspirational designs from across the world.

PUN: This post is about a company named Nice Work and the just happen to showcase nice work on their monthly magazine and blog…

I hope its not CHEESY for me to say, “Here is some NICE WORK”

1. Renée Rossouw “Pattern Diary”. A Pattern maker from Cape Town, her patterns were incorporated in ceramics.

2. Coralie Bickford-Smith is a talented senior cover designer at Penguin Books. The beautifully ornate patterns on the F. Scott Fitzgerald book covers evoke the nostalgic world of the books. Being a Fitzgerald fan, I must say I love the sophistication the patterns used. It’s definitely book covers that are sure to make your book shelf look good and classy.

3. Food goes GRAPHIC. A book designed by Jacob Kenedy and Caz Hildebrand. I love simple design, and this eliminates food photography that we are so used to. Good for them. A new way to look at cook books.

4. If you are like me, and cannot read maps, I never seem to find my way using maps. I’m the kind of person that is likely to ask all filling stations for directions until I get to my destination. Now I know I shouldn’t have missed those map work Geography classes back in high school.

DO NOT be dismayed, If you are looking at hotspots in the three major cities in South Africa, Nice Work has made a pictorial map for us illiterate beings. So no more pink, red and green lines that you don’t know lead where.
